I was so excited when I was given the opportunity to review the Manhood Journey Father’s Starter Kit from Manhood Journey & City on a Hill Studio.  It’s the first product that I was able to give to my husband to use!

Since we have a 15 year old son, it was a perfect fit for my family.  My husband loved the idea of having something to guide him through conversations and Bible study with our son.  Having never used a kit or guide like this before, I was very interested to know what they would both think of it.

What is Manhood Journey?

So basically, Manhood Journey is more than just this study.  It’s actually a large resource of materials for fathers and sons. Their goal is to help build relationships and deepen their Christian walk.  It turns out that their are actually 6 “Modules” of study for the small group or one-on-one studies.  The module we used is called “Embarking” and it’s the first module.

Embarking

The module seemed to focus on the “5 Big Rocks” which the boys learned about on the first day/meeting.  Each “rock” represents key areas of manhood.  The Group Guide gives the father all he needs to lead a discussion for either a group or one-on-one meetings with his sons.  The explanations are easy and very straight forward.

Typically, you and your son would join together with a small group of other dads and sons to “embark” on this journey together.  The Group Guide would be used as a group by leading the boys and dads in some fun questions and discussions.  The key area or “rock” is discussed and verses are also linked to each week.

Throughout the week, the dads could use the 1-on-1 Guide to dig deeper into the topic and have more conversations.

How My Husband Used It

After the first meeting, my husband realized the difference between the Group Guide and the 1-on-1 Guide.  We thought that since we were doing this just one-on-one with our son, that he would only need the 1-on-1 Guide…but actually he found that there was still wonderful information int he Group Guide that he could use.

Basically he would read both the Group Guide and the 1-on-1 Guide ahead of time.  Sometimes there was a video link or a demonstration (week 1) that needed just a bit of prep work. Then he decided what parts of the Group Guide he wanted to include (if any) and then followed the 1-on-1 Guide together with our son.

My Husband’s Thoughts

My husband found that the guide was very helpful.  He said that the loved they way they used the “5 Rocks” as a way to really hammer in those 5 key areas of manhood.  My husband is pretty quiet and usually not too comfortable leading many discussions, but he said he felt very comfortable and loved hearing my son discuss things that they wouldn’t have thought to even talk about without this guide!  They haven’t finished yet due to some major yucky sickness that ran through our house, but he plans to continue using it and maybe even continuing on to the next journey!

Both my husband and I both agree that this is a wonderful resource and can easily be used as a group or just within your own family.  Raising Godly men that honor God and know how to lead their families in the ways of the Lord is so important! This is truly a wonderful ministry that I hope you’ll take a look at!
