A better Valentine

A better Valentine

The day of love. Flowers. Chocolate. Cards. Dates.

But what about our true love? What about the one that loved us first? What are we doing for Him?

Do you remember being young and “in love” (or so you thought)? The hours thinking about the cute boy in class?  The hours talking about him with your friends? The days you spent wondering if you were going to be together forever? The weeks or months you spent trying to learn everything about him? Or maybe the countless hours you spent talking on the phone?

“You hang up.”

“No, you hang up.”

Our First Love

Jesus spent those same hours and thousands more thinking about us! He and the Father spent countless eternity pondering and thinking and loving us even before we were born. And since we’ve been born? Well, He spent all these years memorizing us. Knowing the hairs on our head. Knowing our very being… (and the amazing part?) ….loving us anyway!

“I love you.”

“I love you more.”

“No, I love you more!”

Only Jesus loves us more. More than anything we can do or give. We are so unable to earn His love….but He gives it anyway! And He is saying…

“I love you more.”

“Come to me. I will give you rest.” He says.

“Come to me. I want to give you everything.” He promises.

“Come to me. Just relax in my arms and I will protect you.” He yearns.

And we love Him back because He first loved us. Because He gave it all up for us. And yet we can’t seem to find the time to just say hello. To just get to know Him. He waits. He won’t push….He won’t demand….He waits.

“You hang up.”

“No, you hang up.”

Do we want to spend time with Him? Do we yearn to spend that extra minute? Not wanting to hang up first. Do we spend countless hours trying to learn everything we can about Him? Do we memorize His face and His stories? His personality? Or do we just expect Him to be there like the switch on the wall?

Do we take His love and His sacrifice for granted?

There is no way that we can fathom His love for us. No way that we can do enough to equal His love for us. But we can spend our lives trying.

So what can we do?

Remember that boy in class? How you wanted to just be with him? To just stare at him? To talk to him? To just know him? That’s what we do! Just be with Him. Just stare into His heart. Just talk to Him. Just want to know Him. Read His Book. It’s all there….His history, His plan, His wish for you. It’s all there….His promises, His purpose, His dreams for you.

a better valentine bibleIt’s his Valentine Card just for you. Won’t you open it? Won’t you read it? Won’t you cherish it? It’s the most special gift anyone will ever give you. It’s the most costly gift you’ll ever receive. More precious than silver, more costly than gold. It was paid for with His blood.

If the love of your life sacrificed his own life to save yours….wouldn’t you cherish every memory you had of him? Jesus did this for you. And He cherishes every memory He has of us…shouldn’t we do the same?

Know Him. Learn Him. Love Him.

Read His Valentine to you. Memorize it. Put it in your heart and mind. Give this gift to those around you. To your children.

This is my goal. To memorize His Word. His love letter to me. His instructions for me. And to give this gift to my children.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Isn’t it amazing how loved we are? Even when the world may tell us otherwise…the Creator of all things says Yes! You are loved! More than you know!

Here are just a few parts of His love letter to you!

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Romans 5:8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 8:37-39 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

1 John 3:1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God, and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
